Honister Slate

The last working slate mine in England

Honister Slate Mine produces the iconic Westmorland Green Slate. The distinctive green volcanic rock is over 450 million years old.

The mountain has been mined for centuries, with it’s earliest known extraction during the Roman occupation.

High-quality natural slate played an important part in this country’s history and industrial past. Today, an experienced team of miners and craftsmen allow for the legacy to live on in Cumbria.
